FREE REPORT from Bridging Hope Counseling - 10 Ways to Connect With Your Teen10 Ways to Connect with your Teen: 1. Say something nice at least once a day - even if it's not a good day
2. Make eye contact. Real eye contact
3. Listen! Validate them. Hear what they have to say - no matter how ridiculous it sounds
4. Know that you will not get quick responses - much of what you parent won't get recognized until 5 or 10 years later. Be patient.
5. Look at yourself. Do you remember being that age? 6. Don’t give a punishment for over 72 hours – it starts to backfire and they learn how to live while being punished.
7. Don't ever take back a punishment you gave. They start to disrespect you without you seeing it and connections can be lost. Be consistent. 8. Trust your lying teenager. Don't ever give up even when they lie. Keep teaching and parenting.
9. Have a family meeting. It sounds cheesy, but it gives the opportunity to talk in a "safe" environment. They will feel more comfortable to connect with you outside the meeting, too.
10. Hug them! Or did you forget about this one?
