Jennifer Knapp, MS, LMFT - Clinical Director & Marriage and Family Therapist

Jennifer is passionate about parenting and supporting families to make the best decisions possible for their children, especially as they navigate through tough relationship issues. Jennifer has spent many years working with adolescents and their families as a high school English teacher. She genuinely enjoys working with this population and is able to build rapport with adolescents, working through the surface attitude to make an authentic connection. Working with both the adolescent and their families encourages positive communication, cohesiveness and mutual respect between family members. Adolescence can be a tough time full of shifting roles, expectations and responsibilities. Jennifer works with the family to continue to strengthen their foundation and ease this transition.

She also specializes in high conflict couples, people who have experienced trauma or are currently experiencing significant relationship issues, and parents striving to support and understand their children through all the developmental changes that come with growing up. Jennifer enjoys working with couples, particularly regarding communication issues. Clients can learn basic skills to improve communication and strengthen their intimate relationships. She believes couples can re-establish that “spark”, share a vision of a connected future and feel both valued and validated by their partners. She is particularly comfortable working with issues of trust, infidelity, anger and betrayal. Most of us have a deep desire to just be heard. Couples’ therapy creates the opportunity for this to happen as the intimate relationship evolves and grows.

Jennifer also works with women that may be involved in codependent or unhealthy relationships and adolescents who are struggling through their own transitions. Jennifer is EMDR trained, a specific form of therapy that allows people to process through trauma and intense experiences. She is also DBT trained and co facilitates several DBT groups a week. DBT focuses on mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. She has also received specialized training in couple’s communication, infidelity, and sand tray therapy. Her legal training and experience also makes her uniquely qualified in working with individuals and families processing through a divorce or coming out of the divorce process.

She received a BA in English Literature and Secondary Education from Nazareth College in Rochester, NY and an MS in Marriage and Family Therapy from Capella University. She also served in the US Air Force. She is trained in a variety of theoretical approaches and adept at working with the clients to meet their needs while fostering personal growth and development.
